The Therapy Process

People may decide to embark on a therapeutic process for assistance with various types of problems. Sometimes they may feel stuck in a particular area or battle with behavioural, emotional or relational issues. Therapy aims to be a safe place where the client may talk about their problems in the context of a professional, supportive relationship. The therapy process usually initially involves an assessment of the problem and taking a history.  Thereafter we decide on the best way forward. I usually tailor my approach according to the client’s specific presenting problems and needs.  If necessary I may also need to refer to other professionals if the problem requires a team approach.

Professional background and training

I am registered with the HPCSA as a Clinical and Counselling Psychologist.  I qualified in 1994 after completing my masters degree and internship at the University of Port Elizabeth.  I completed further training in the UK context and am also qualified as a Chartered Clinical Psychologist in the UK.  I am a member of the British Psychological Society.   Currently I practice in both Kenilworth and Fish Hoek.

My therapeutic approach is eclectic. This approach may include the modalities of person centred therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, transactional analysis and solution focussed therapy. If applicable, mindfulness techniques may form part of the therapeutic intervention. I also am trained in Brain Working Recursive Therapy (BWRT) and am qualified at level 2 advanced training.

BWRT is a model of psychology and psychotherapy created by UK professional therapist, Terence Watts, MCGI.  It’s a totally confidential method that doesn’t require you to reveal your private information or personal secrets to your therapist and is carried out in a completely conscious state.  It doesn’t use hypnosis or any mystical concepts – it’s completely logical, practical and down-to-earth and only needs you to know what you want to change in your life for it to be successful.  Only Certified Practitioners have been trained to deliver BWRT and all have to adhere to a strict ethical code.  Find out more at http://www.bwrt.org or at http://www.bwrtsa.co.za. BWRT is an effective, fast growing therapeutic approach based on neuroscience. It has been shown to be helpful in many areas, including generalized anxiety, panic attacks, phobias, social anxiety and grief and loss.

What clients say about Sharon

"Sharon Hoek has been my therapist and my backbone for more than three years now. Her gentle, validating approach, her guidance and support and her use of the Brain Working Recursive Therapy have been the only reason I am now standing tall and strong, despite trauma after trauma amidst a difficult divorce, chronic illnesses, burnout and childhood guilt baggage. Her patience, her care, her approaches have always resonated with my own values and beliefs and I would recommend her in a heartbeat to anybody needing that gentle soul that is there for you and provides you with the tools to find your feet and be who you were meant to be. A strong, compassionate and empowered human on this great big lovely earth."
